Kansas City Chiefs running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire left Friday night’s preseason game early with an ankle injury. Fortunately, it sounds like his injury isn’t that severe.
During last night’s press conference, Chiefs head coach Andy Reid didn’t seem very worried about Edwards-Helaire’s status moving forward.
“Clyde hurt his right ankle early,” Reid said. “He’s got a slight sprain on the inside of his ankle. They’re gonna check it tomorrow. It doesn’t look like a high-ankle sprain so that’s always a good thing, but they’ll double check it.”
There’s no timetable for Edwards-Helaire’s return at this time. It’s fair to assume that he’ll sit out Kansas City’s preseason finale.
Chiefs’ RB Clyde Edwards-Helaire sprained his right ankle last night. “They got to check it (today), do what they do there,” said Andy Reid. “It’s tender now. It doesn’t look like a high-ankle sprain. That’s always a good thing. They’ll double-check it.”

In 13 games last season, Edwards-Helaire had 803 rushing yards, 297 receiving yards and five total touchdowns. He missed some time late in the year due to a hip injury.
Edwards-Helaire is expected to take that next step this season, especially since he spent this offseason developing his skills as a pass catcher.
“Working on my hands and catching,” Edwards-Helaire said when asked what he’s working on this offseason. “I wouldn’t say it was a problem last year, but just understanding our offense – we move the ball around and we spread the field – so why not work on something that I feel like I can improve on? That was one of my steps as far as improvement goes.”
The Chiefs are going to need Edwards-Helaire at 100 percent if they’re going to be at their best this season.
If Edwards-Helaire isn’t healthy enough to suit up for Week 1, Darrel Williams and Jerick McKinnon would have to split carries.
