ESPN Insider: Jalen Hurts Is “Surging As Of Late”

August 20, 2021 by The Spun Leave a Comment

Jalen Hurts runs the football for the Eagles.

Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts was a late scratch for last night’s preseason matchup with the New England Patriots due to a stomach ailment. The timing of this situation is unfortunate, but Hurts’ chances of winning the starting job shouldn’t be affected by this at all.

As a matter of fact, ESPN insider Jeremy Fowler had an encouraging update on Hurts’ progression in camp this Friday. He spoke to multiple sources who believe the second-year quarterback is better than people expected.

“I’m hearing he’s surging of late,” Fowler said on ESPN’s Get Up. “I spoke to multiple people in the NFL who were at the Eagles’ joint practice with the Patriots, and I was told ‘He was more accurate than I thought. He was very impressive – best quarterback on the field in that setting.’ In fact, I think he would’ve had the full-time starter treatment last night had he not gotten ill. He would’ve maybe played a series, and then they would’ve yanked him because they like what he’s doing in the practice setting.”

Judging by Fowler’s report, the Eagles pretty much know that Hurts will start Week 1 against the Atlanta Falcons.

During his rookie season, Jalen Hurts had 1,061 passing yards, six touchdowns and four interceptions. He also had 354 yards and three scores on the ground.

Hurts will need to be much better this fall if he wants to prove that he can be a franchise quarterback for Philadelphia.

Fortunately for the Eagles, it sounds like Hurts is developing fairly well in Nick Sirianni’s offense. It also helps that there won’t be any controversy surrounding the quarterback room like last year.

As long as Hurts makes a full recovery from his stomach infection, which is expected, he’ll be out there for the Eagles’ season opener.
