Dick Vitale Thinks 1 Rule Is Hurting College Basketball

March 27, 2022 by The Spun

With the Elite Eight about to begin, ESPN analyst Dick Vitale has revealed his biggest issue with the current state of college basketball.

Vitale doesn’t like when players from mid-majors leave their respective programs after a nice run in the NCAA tournament.

“Mike Brey and other big time coaches are doing nothing wrong going after developed ready to play talent from the transfer portal,” Vitale tweeted. “The reason why I don’t like the rule is a mid-major player becomes a star and says bye-bye to where they helped him. The rule is hurting college and high school.

“It hurts high school because rather than recruit the high school prospects some not all coaches get the word in the recruiting network that if John gets his name in portal that they would take him. That is flat-out cheating and teaching kids loyalty means zilch. Transfer is no problem, but they should sit a year.”

There’s one major issue with this argument from Vitale.

We’ve seen plenty of coaches lead mid-majors to Cinderella runs and then take the best job available in the offseason. Transfers shouldn’t have to sit out a year, especially since their former coaches don’t have to when they jump ship for a different program.

Do you agree with Dick Vitale’s rant about the transfer portal?
