The quarterback competition is over in Denver. Teddy Bridgewater has officially beaten out Drew Lock.
Broncos head coach Vic Fangio announced moments ago that Bridgewater will be the team’s starting QB in Week 1 against the New York Giants. The former first-round pick won the job over Lock this summer.
By all accounts, the competition was a tight one. Lock, the Broncos’ second round pick in 2019, started 13 games last year, but his inconsistency led to the team trading for Bridgewater before the NFL Draft.
On Sunday, Fangio expressed confidence in both players after Denver’s 30-3 preseason win over Seattle. Bridgewater completed 9-of-11 passes for 105 yards and a touchdown while Lock was 9-for-14 for 80 yards.
“Both of these guys have done well,” Fangio said in his post-game press conference. “We can play and win with either one of these guys, and that’s a good thing.”

The 28-year-old Bridgewater, whose career was almost cut short by a devastating leg injury in 2016, was the primary starter for the Carolina Panthers last season. In 15 starts, he passed for 3,733 yards, 15 touchdowns and 11 interceptions.
Denver will conclude the 2021 preseason on Saturday against the Los Angeles Rams before opening up the regular season against the Giants on September 12.
