David Carr Has Telling Admission On Justin Fields Situation

August 30, 2021 by The Spun Leave a Comment

Justin Fields throws a pass during Bears training camp.

Chicago Bears rookie quarterback Justin Fields has not been named the team’s starting quarterback for Week 1 against the Los Angeles Rams, and at this point he probably won’t be. But for former NFL QB David Carr, Fields probably shouldn’t be either.

Appearing on the Dan Patrick Show, Carr had a telling statement on why the Bears might be reluctant to put Fields out there. He pointed out that the Bears offensive line is struggling so much that they might not want to risk Fields getting hurt.

Carr pointed to his own experience being behind a bad offensive line as a rookie for the Houston Texans in 2002. He was sacked an NFL record 76 times as a rookie, and his career never recovered from the beatings.

“Do we want to put Justin Fields behind the Bears offensive line that I’ve watched the last three weeks? Absolutely not. I’ve been in that situation,” Carr said.

The expectations for the Chicago Bears offensive line are pretty low for the coming season. But Derek Carr seems to be having mixed levels of support for his theory on protecting Justin Fields better.

“Fields is bigger, stronger, faster and more mentally tough than Carr was. You gonna leave your Ferrari in the garage afraid to get it dinged? He’s the best QB on the roster. Play him,” one fan replied.

“David Carr was in a situation where he had Justin Field’s talent? I don’t remember that,” wrote another.

“Jeez you can’t protect him forever,” a third fan replied.

The Chicago Bears are expected to start the season with Andy Dalton as their quarterback.

Should the Bears heed David Carr’s advice and keep Justin Fields off the field to protect him?
