The Dallas Cowboys have freed up some salary cap space heading into the 2021 regular season.
Earlier this week, the Cowboys were able to restructure the contract of superstar running back Ezekiel Elliott. Dallas turned some of Elliott’s 2021 contract into a signing bonus.
It’s possible that the Cowboys will look to make a trade with some of the freed up money.
“The Cowboys reportedly restructured Ezekiel Elliott’s contract on Friday morning, converting $8.6 of his $9.6 million 2021 salary in a signing bonus. The move creates roughly $7 million in cap space this season,” DallasCowboys.com wrote.
“Don’t overreact to that number, though. The restructure does give the Cowboys more cap space this season, but it also buys the team an additional $5 million in cap space next year if they carry it over to 2022.”
The Cowboys could be in need of some help on defense, especially in the secondary. Rookie cornerback Kelvin Joseph left today’s game with an apparent injury.

Patriots star cornerback Stephon Gilmore has been mentioned as a potential trade target all offseason.
Cowboys Wire lists Gilmore as a top target for the Cowboys, if they decide to pursue a potential trade with the freed up cap space:
Gilmore, 31, is still seen as a top player in the league despite having a down year in 2020. He had just one interception and two pass breakups in 11 games after 10 picks and 33 PBUs combined over the previous two seasons.
As of now, he would cost an acquiring team $7.5 million in base salary and game bonuses in the final year of his contract.
The Cowboys are finishing up their preseason on Sunday against the Jaguars.
Dallas opens the season on Thursday, Sept. 9 against Tampa Bay.
