All eyes are on five rookie quarterbacks so far during the NFL’s preseason. Two in particular are starting to garner major attention.
Five quarterbacks heard their names called during the 2021 NFL Draft. Trevor Lawrence went first overall to the Jaguars. The Jets then took Zach Wilson at No. 2 and the 49ers took Trey Lance at No. 3. Justin Fields went to the Bears at No. 11 and Mac Jones went to the Patriots at No. 15.
Each has gotten an opportunity to play during the NFL’s preseason so far, and each has shown promise. Two rookies in particular are garnering major buzz, though, thanks to their terrific performances.
PFF issued Jones a 92.4 grade from what it’s seen during the preseason, which tops all rookie quarterbacks. Wilson checks in at No. 2 at 85.7.

Mac Jones went 13 of 19 for 87 yards in his NFL preseason debut against the Washington Football Team. He was even better this past Thursday when he had 146 passing yards on 13 completions.
Zach Wilson, meanwhile, has looked like everything the Jets had hoped for when they drafted him. On Saturday, he completed nine of his 11 pass attempts for 128 yards and two touchdowns. A week prior, Wilson had 63 passing yards on six completions.
It’s just the preseason, though. It’s too early to make a judgement call on which rookie quarterbacks will prove best.
You can catch one of this year’s rookie quarterbacks in Trey Lance play this evening when the 49ers take on the Chargers at 7:30 p.m. ET on NFL Network.
