Colts Coach Frank Reich Offers Latest On Sam Ehlinger’s Injury

The Indianapolis Colts’ depth chart took another hit on Friday night, as rookie quarterback Sam Ehlinger left the team’s preseason finale early because of a knee injury.

Ehlinger looked sharp in limited against last night against the Detroit Lions, completing his first three pass attempts for 63 yards. At one point, he completed a 60-yard strike downfield to wide receiver Dezmon Patmon after escaping a sack.

Unfortunately, Ehlinger went down with a knee injury and the first half and was quickly ruled out for the remainder of the game. That’s never a great sign, especially when dealing with a knee injury.

Following the win over the Lions on Friday night, Colts head coach Frank Reich was asked about the severity of Ehlinger’s knee injury. He said there’s no update on Ehlinger’s status, but he did mention that it “didn’t look good.”

Ehlinger has been involved in an intense competition with Jacob Eason for the No. 2 spot on the Colts’ depth chart. This injury will seriously impact his chances of being the team’s backup quarterback.

If Ehlinger has to miss an extended period of time because of this injury, Indianapolis may decide to keep veteran quarterback Brett Hundley on the main roster. Last night, Hundley completed 6 of 12 passes for 52 yards, a touchdown and an interception.

An update on Ehlinger’s status should be available in the coming days.
