Colin Cowherd doesn’t have too much faith in the New England Patriots‘ quarterback situation right now.
The Patriots were one of five teams to take a quarterback in the first round of the 2021 NFL Draft, joining the Jaguars, Jets, 49ers and Bears. Three of the five have pretty solid quarterback situations. The Jaguars have Trevor Lawrence and Gardner Minshew. The 49ers have Jimmy Garoppolo and Trey Lance. The Bears have Andy Dalton and Justin Fields. What about the Patriots?
Taking Mac Jones with the No. 15 overall pick was a no-brainer. He wasn’t expected to slide so far and fits in well with what the Patriots like to do on offense. But New England put the former Alabama star in a strange position when it paired Jones with the veteran Cam Newton.
Newton and Jones are practically opposites at quarterback. That’s why Cowherd believes the Patriots have the worst quarterback situation in the NFL right now.
“It doesn’t even make sense,” Cowherd said of the Patriots’ quarterback room. “Cam is a playmaker and Mac Jones is not athletic.”

He’s not wrong. The Patriots are in a weird spot.
Mac Jones will eventually replace Cam Newton as the Pats’ starting quarterback. Until then, Newton will run the offense – an offense that’ll have to change when Jones takes over.
Colin Cowherd sees the writing on the wall here. New England has a bizarre quarterback situation. It could come back to haunt the Patriots.
