The Nebraska football program began its 2021 season in disappointing fashion on Saturday afternoon at Illinois. The Cornhuskers couldn’t overcome a massive third quarter deficit and dropped their third season opener in four years, 30-23.
Fans laid most of the blame at the feet of head coach Scott Frost, who saw his team fall behind by 21 points, due to a series of crushing mistakes. A botched punt return resulted a safety, a lack of offensive line protection led to a fumble returned for a touchdown and ultimately Nebraska couldn’t overcome those errors to ever draw even with Illinois.
Saturday marked the third time in Scott Frost’s four seasons that the Huskers have lost their opening contest, which doesn’t bode well for setting a positive tone for the year. Expectations in Lincoln are high, but might be considerably lower after yesterday’s debacle.
Although there’s been plenty of criticism heaped upon Frost, FOX Sports host Colin Cowherd implied that the issues at Nebraska run far deeper than a few disappointing head coaches.
“Maybe it’s not always the football coaches fault at Nebraska. Things change. What works in 1995 doesn’t always crush in 2021. In any business,” Cowherd tweeted on Sunday morning.

Cowherd might be right. Frost isn’t the only program leader to struggle at Nebraska in recent memory. However, the blame always seems to lie with the head coach, for better or for worse.
In the last six seasons, Nebraska has had just one winning record. Under Frost in the last three years, the Cornhuskers have gone 12-20. If that trajectory continues in 2021, the program may have to entertain more significant changes to get back on the right track and have any hope to compete in the Big Ten moving forward.
Nebraska will try to bounce back from its Week 0 disappointment next Saturday at home against Fordham.
