The Chicago Bears have officially parted ways with wide receiver Javon Wims. The team announced the move just moments ago in an official press release.
Wims was selected by the Bears in the seventh round of the 2018 NFL Draft. He didn’t make much of an impact as a rookie, but he did have 18 catches for 186 yards and a touchdown in his second season.
Unfortunately for Wims, the highlight of his third season in the NFL was a brawl with New Orleans Saints defensive back C.J. Gardner-Johnson. The reason that fight even happened in the first place is because Gardner-Johnson removed Wims’ mouthpiece from his helmet during the game.
The Bears and Saints met later that year in the playoffs, where Wims dropped a wide-open touchdown pass from Mitch Trubisky.
Since he was already buried on the depth chart heading into the preseason finale, the Bears ultimately decided to waive Wims. Taking his place on the roster is defensive back Dionte Ruffin.

At the end of the day, the Bears felt like Marquise Goodwin, Damiere Byrd, Riley Ridley and Chris Lacy deserved a roster spot over Wims. Let’s also not forget that Chicago has two legitimate playmakers at wide receiver in Allen Robinson and Darnell Mooney.
Wims, 26, should receive another opportunity elsewhere in the NFL. His 6-foot-2 frame makes him an ideal target in the red zone.
