CBB Coach Receives 2-Game Suspension For NCAA Violations

Texas A&M head basketball coach Buzz Williams has been suspended for two games during the 2021-22 season after the program violated multiple NCAA rules this past year. Punishments were decided in an agreement between the university, Williams, an assistant coach involved in the violations and the NCAA enforcement staff.

According to a statement released by the Division I Committee on Infractions on Friday, Williams had “impermissible contact” with a recruit during the evaluation period. The assistant coach in question violated NCAA rules when he observed a recruit in an open gym during his unofficial visit and then conducted two 45-minute tryouts in which he provided coaching instruction.

The assistant coach has already served his punishment, suspended from June 2020 through the end of the 2020-21 season.

These and other off-campus workouts facilitated by the Texas A&M coaching staff were in direct violation of the NCAA’s COVID-19 regulations.

While Williams wasn’t directly involved in these off-campus workouts, the NCAA is punishing him for not promoting “an atmosphere of compliance” with his coaching staff.

Here are the rest of the punishments levied in the Aggies program:

  • Two years of probation.
  • A $5,000 fine.
  • A reduction in men’s basketball official visits for the 2021-22 academic year by five.
  • A suspension of unofficial visits during the first three Southeastern Conference men’s basketball games during the 2021-22 academic year.
  • A reduction in men’s basketball recruiting days by 5% (7 days out of 130) during the 2021-22 academic year

This case was processed though the negotiated resolution process: a joint agreement between the Texas A&M program and the NCAA. Negotiated resolutions are not able to be appealed.
