The Carolina Panthers have reconstructed Christian McCaffrey’s contract in order to clear $5.5 million in cap space heading into the 2022 season, per NFL Network insider Tom Pelissero.
McCaffrey signed a four-year, $64 million extension with the Panthers in the spring of 2020. Since then, he’s taken the field for just 10 games.

McCaffrey’s name was mentioned in possible trade talks earlier this offseason, but this contract move likely means the Panthers are hanging onto their superstar running back through at least the 2022 season. The former All-Pro weapon is currently under contract with the Carolina organization through the 2025 season.
Dealing with multiple injury issues this past season, McCaffrey took the field for just seven contests. He suited up for just three games in 2020.
Though injuries have derailed his last two seasons, McCaffrey has proven himself as an elite offensive weapon when healthy. In 2019, he led the NFL in yards and touchdowns from scrimmage with 2,392 and 19.
Prior to this contract restructure, McCaffrey was set to earn $8.78 million in 2022.
