NFL teams need to make roster cuts once again ahead of the third and final preseason game. For the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, their cuts have spelled the end of one former Alabama wide receiver’s time with them.
According to Buccaneers insider Rick Stroud, wide receiver T.J. Simmons is one of three players being waived today. Simmons joined the Buccaneers as an undrafted free agent this offseason.
In 2016, Simmons played in 12 games for the Alabama Crimson Tide, but almost entirely on special teams. He had one tackle that year and no other stats, and decided to transfer to West Virginia the following year.
After sitting out the 2017 season, Simmons became a solid contributor on offense for the Mountaineers between 2018 and 2020. He finished his college career with 86 receptions for 1,197 yards and nine touchdowns.
Simmons joins running back Troymaine Pope and linebacker Nate Brooks among Buccaneers cuts today.
#Bucs will waive/release five players to reach the 80-man roster limit and those cuts will begin today. WR T.J. Simmons, RB Troymaine Pope, LB Nate Brooks will be among those players waived. Pope did not play Saturday night.

T.J. Simmons had a hard time making an impact in the preseason for the Buccaneers. He was targeted twice but had no receptions in their 34-3 loss to the Tennessee Titans. It was the same story in their preseason opener against the Bengals – one target, no catches.
Simmons certainly doesn’t benefit from the fact that the Buccaneers are absolutely stacked at wide receiver right now. Several more Buccaneers receivers are likely to follow Simmons to the waiver wire in the days to come.
Will T.J. Simmons find a new team before the 2021 season starts?
