Less than two months after retiring, Tom Brady changed his mind and returned to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Rather than simply appreciating another season from the all-time great, the attention has already turned to his 2023 plans.
On Monday, per JoeBucsFan.com, Buccaneers general manager Jason Licht fielded a question about retaining the seven-time Super Bowl champion for what would be his age-46 season next year.
He understandably dodged the inquiry.
“You know, we’re just happy that we have him back,” Licht said. “We’ll see where it goes from here. We’re just happy that he’s going to be playing for us this year. We’ll see where it goes.”
When then asked if Brady wants to be a free agent next offseason, Licht said that Brady would have to answer that question.
Three weeks ago, Licht was searching for quarterbacks to replace the 15-time Pro Bowl passer. He can be forgiven for not having any clue what will happen beyond this season.
If Brady plays anywhere near as well as he did when tallying an NFL-leading 5,316 passing yards last season, the Buccaneers would gladly leave the door open for one more run. However, Brady might have other ideas.
Regardless of what he thinks now, Brady could think differently by next winter. Licht has little recourse but to stay patient and enjoy the ride while he can.
