The Tampa Bay Buccaneers boast a loaded roster that many believe can win the Super Bowl again this year. Unfortunately, one standout player won’t get to be a part of it anymore.
According to reports, the Buccaneers are releasing tight end Tanner Hudson ahead of the 53-man roster deadline. Hudson led all Buccaneers players in receiving this preseason. He had 12 receptions for 131 yards over three games.
Unfortunately for Hudson, he was trying to earn a roster spot on the team with the most stacked tight ends room in the NFL. At best Hudson would have been the fourth tight end behind Rob Gronkowski, OJ Howard and Cameron Brate.
That said, being the fourth tight end hasn’t necessarily been an obstacle before. NFL reporter Dov Kleiman noted that the Buccaneers had four tight ends on their opening day roster last season.
In a bit of a surprising move, the #Bucs are cutting Tanner Hudson, a capable pass catching TEs who led the team in pre-season receiving, according to @gregauman
The Bucs obviously have depth at the position with Gronk, Howard and Brate.

Considering they kept 4 TEs on their Week 1 roster last season, it is “a bit” surprising they didn’t want to keep a productive receiving TE [at least in preseason] in case Gronk/Howard/Brate suffer an injury as we’ve seen in the past. Yep.

Over the past two seasons, Hudson has played in 20 games and recorded five receptions for 67 yards.
Fortunately for Tanner Hudson, receiving tight ends are at a premium these days and plenty of teams don’t have one. Once he hits the waiver wire it’s very likely that he will get added to a team’s final roster.
At the very least, Hudson should find a home on someone’s practice squad before the season starts next week.
Which team – if any – will pick up Tanner Hudson for the 2021 season?
