Earlier this week, Notre Dame head coach Brian Kelly made a comment that has Fighting Irish fans buzzing.
He spoke to a panel of Steph Curry, Dell Curry, Vince Carter, Jimmy Rollins, Justin Tuck, CC Sabathia and Kyle Rudolph. During the conversation about race, Kelly said the team’s current defensive coordinator, Marcus Freeman, would be “the” next head coach.
“My defensive coordinator is black, and he’s going to be the next head coach,” Kelly said via CBS Sports. “This is not about color or race. This is about the things that he just talked about. Steph talked about the important things to be a CEO and understanding how to make people around you better.”
Here’s video of the clip for context.

Following the 2020 season, it sounded like Freeman was close to signing a deal with the LSU Tigers. However, Brian Kelly and company swooped in and landed the former Cincinnati defensive coordinator.
He’s considered a rising superstar in the coaching ranks and will be a head coach sooner rather than later. However, it’s unclear if Kelly was speaking in general about Freeman’s head coaching candidacy or if he truly meant Freeman will be the next head coach at Notre Dame.
We’ll just have to wait and see.
