Few coaches are capable of having as much success at Notre Dame as Brian Kelly did. That’s what made his departure to LSU this offseason so unsettling for Fighting Irish fans. But Kelly knew he reached his peak in South Bend. Leaving for Notre Dame became a necessary decision.
In speaking with The Associated Press on Thursday, Kelly revealed that the real reason he left Notre Dame for LSU is because he feels the Tigers have the resources and facilities to win a national championship. Notre Dame, in his eyes, doesn’t
“It’s been awesome because you’ve got incredible facilities, you’ve got players that want to be great,” Kelly said.
“I want to be in an environment where I have the resources to win a national championship. And I came down here because I want to be in the American League East.”
Brian Kelly made the most shocking move of a crazy coaching carousel.
Why he made the move and how he’s settling in at LSU.

There also reaches a point in every coach’s tenure with a team that he feels he’s reached his peak. Kelly feels he hit that at Notre Dame.
Sure, he could have stayed in South Bend for the rest of his coaching career. He’d continue winning nine to 10 games each season with the occasional trip to the College Football Playoff. But in Kelly’s two trips to college football’s exclusive postseason, the Fighting Irish were completely outmatched by juggernauts like Clemson and Alabama.
“I felt like I did everything that I could at Notre Dame and they felt like they did everything they could for me,” Kelly added.
“I felt like we had both got to a point where this is what they could do, right? This is what I did. And we couldn’t get past that. OK? And so here we are.”
LSU has top-notch resources and facilities. It’s an easy area to recruit top prospects. And don’t forget to be the best you have to beat the best. Kelly and the Tigers will have that opportunity each and every week in the SEC.
Kelly’s departure to LSU, while stunning, proves completely reasonable. The good news is all is not lost for the Fighting Irish.
Notre Dame has every reason to be excited about the future with Marcus Freeman now at the helm.
