In 2014, the United States got drawn against Germany, Portugal and Ghana for the World Cup in what was known as “the Group of Death” for how challenging the three opponents were. At today’s draw for the 2022 FIFA World Cup, the United States got a slightly easier group – but one that still presents plenty of challenges.
The World Cup draw was today and the USMNT got placed into Group B against England, Iran and the winner of the UEFA Path A playoff – either Scotland, Wales or Ukraine. As a result, the USMNT will play on the very first day of the World Cup group stage – November 21, 2022.
The USMNT last played England in the Group Stage of the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. That game was a 1-1 draw with a Clint Dempsey goal in the 40th minute canceling out Steven Gerrard’s 4th minute goal. The US would go on to finish top of their group but lost to Ghana in the Round of 16.
Iran played the United States at the 1998 World Cup, with Iran winning 2-1. The USMNT finished bottom of their group that year.
It’s going to be a few months before the US finds out who they play their first game against. Scotland play Ukraine in June and the winner of that game plays Wales with the final spot in the World Cup on the line. All three teams rank in the top 40 in the world.

Matchday 1 against the UEFA playoff winner will be November 21. Their second game against England will be on November 25. Matchday 3 will be November 29 against Iran.
The USMNT had to battle a lot of good teams just to get this far. Now the real challenge begins.
What are your thoughts on the group?
