Breaking: Troubled Athlete Fighting for NFL Comeback – 5 Possible Fits

May 2, 2025 by Last Word On Pro Football

henry ruggs nfl comeback

Former Las Vegas Raider wide receiver Henry Ruggs is reportedly fighting for an NFL comeback as he’s training hard for a potential return. According to reports, the wide receiver remains in good spirits as Ruggs is hopeful there will be a second chance when he gets out of prison. Originally selected in the 2020 NFL Draft, the former first-rounder became one of the most promising playmakers coming out of Alabama, signing a four-year contract to team with former teammate Josh Jacobs in Las Vegas. Ruggs did show a lot of potential upside, even though it was small in the books, recording 26 receptions, 452 receiving yards and two touchdowns in just 13 games played.

Unfortunately, he wasn’t able to stay out of trouble as he got himself involved in a drunk driving car crash. The wide receiver is working his way back to move past it, serving his sentence, and is currently in good spirits. However, Green Bay Packers running back Josh Jacobs has been having conversations with Ruggs over the year, and it’s been a joyous experience for both as the wide receiver says he’s training hard in prison to make a comeback. Jacobs still believes in Ruggs, and the wide receiver is looking to return to the league once he’s eligible, when he gets out next year in August, when he’s on parole.

These five teams might wait one more year to monitor his behavior, and understandably, the wide receiver could receive a second opportunity with these rosters that may give him one more shot.

Next Possible Teams

Kansas City Chiefs

This would be the most logical fit for Henry Ruggs, as the Kansas City Chiefs always find a way to navigate a player’s past. Tyreek Hill, Rashee Rice and Xavier Worthy are one of the few examples, but if any NFL team could change an athlete’s life around, it’s the Chiefs. However, Quarterback Patrick Mahomes will only get better when he has a lot of capable weapons and Marquise Brown will probably be in a new uniform when Ruggs is out of prison and could provide some upside even as a potential No. 3 receiver.

Baltimore Ravens

Meanwhile, the Baltimore Ravens still have two capable wideouts that can shine on the field in Zay Flowers and Rashod Bateman. Despite DeAndre Hopkins signing a one-year deal, he’s way past his prime and will only play one more season. Perhaps, Ruggs could fit into this scheme to push this team to a Super Bowl ring.

Carolina Panthers

The Carolina Panthers are in a better position than any other NFL roster when it comes to the receiver room. Since drafting Tetairoa McMillan out of Arizona State, the Panthers could use more pass catchers to help quarterback Bryce Young perform. They know Adam Thielen is hanging on a thread and will likely retire next season, so Ruggs could pair with McMillan in the backend of the depth chart while Xavier Legette and Jalen Coker will be their top guys, depending on the situation.

Los Angeles Chargers

The Los Angeles Chargers finally got another wide receiver after acquiring Tre Harris. However, he will be developing since he’s just a rookie, while he resembles Joshua Palmer and Quentin Johnston combined. Speaking of Johnston, he’s on the hot seat, and Ruggs could take his spot if the Chargers want to give him one more chance to prove worthy alongside the 2024 draft pick Ladd McConkey.

Dallas Cowboys

Things are not going the way that many Dallas Cowboys fans were hoping. The team did not draft a singular wide receiver draft prospect despite getting some guys in the undrafted room. CeeDee Lamb needs legitimate help in the aerial attack, and this organization can’t afford to leave alone with unproven weapons like Jalen Tolbert and Jonathan Mingo. Since Jones loves to give guys second chances, Ruggs could be their last resort.
