It’s been over five years since Steve Lavin coached his last college basketball game. But it appears that Lavin has decided to return to the coaching ranks and take on a new challenge.
According to Stadium college basketball insider Jon Rothstein, San Diego are hiring Lavin as their new head coach. Lavin will replace Sam Scholl, who was fired after four seasons without an NCAA Tournament appearance.
The last time Lavin was on a college basketball sideline was at the end of the 2014-15 season. He was fired by St. John’s after losing to San Diego State in the NCAA Tournament, ending the season at 21-12.
Lavin has worked as a broadcaster for 14 of the last 19 years. He’s been employed by Fox Sports, CBS Sports and the Pac-12 Network.

The two sides could reach an official agreement soon.

Steve Lavin rose to prominence in the mid-90s and early-2000s as head coach of UCLA. He led the Bruins to the Elite Eight in 1997 and to the Sweet 16 in four of the following five seasons.
Lavin was fired in 2003 after going 10-19 and missing the NCAA Tournament that season. He went 145-78 at the helm before going into broadcasting.
St. John’s hired Lavin in 2010 and he promptly took them to the NCAA Tournament that year. But he failed to lead the Red Storm past the Round of 64 and was ousted after the 2015 tournament.
Will San Diego thrive with Steve Lavin as their new head coach?
