BREAKING: Raiders Fire Head Coach Pete Carroll

January 7, 2026 by Raiders Nation

Pete Carroll, Raiders

Coming into this season, head coach Pete Carroll spoke openly about his belief that the Las Vegas Raiders would surprise a lot of people and be back in the postseason. Unfortunately, things went the complete opposite way that he and many others had envisioned.

The Raiders ended the season tied for the worst record in the NFL, and offensive coordinator Chip Kelly was let go in the middle of the year. And now, with the season officially over, and despite a season-ending win over the Kansas City Chiefs, owner Mark Davis released a statement announcing that the team is moving on from Carroll as their head coach after just one season:

The Las Vegas Raiders have relieved Pete Carroll of his duties as head coach. We appreciate and wish him and his family all the best. Moving forward, General Manager John Spytek will lead all football operations in close collaboration with Tom Brady, including the search for the club’s next head coach. Together, they will guide football decisions with a shared focus on leadership, culture, and alignment with the organization’s long-term vision and goals.

This move had been rumored for some time, as Carroll was just unable to get things under control and change the trajectory of this franchise. The Raiders are still set for a rebuild, and with Carroll being the oldest active coach in the NFL, it just wasn’t a fit.

It is worth noting that GM John Spytek will retain his job, and he, along with minority owner Tom Brady, will lead the way in finding the Raiders’ next head coach. No coach has lasted two full seasons since the franchise fired Jon Gruden in 2021, and that lack of continuity has undoubtedly hindered the Raiders over these past few seasons as well.

Nonetheless, the search is now underway to find the next head coach of the Raiders, and hopefully, one who will finally begin to turn the fortunes of this franchise around and get this team back into playoff contention, and ultimately, Super Bowl contention.

Tom Brady expected to increase his presence with Raiders

Minority owner Tom Brady is close with GM John Spytek, as the two were college teammates at Michigan, with Spytek also working with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers when Brady was there at quarterback. The two will work together closely in the offseason, and while Brady hasn’t been at the Raiders facility too much with him serving as a broadcaster for FOX, that is expected to change in the coming months.
