Phil Mickelson’s leave of absence from the PGA Tour will reportedly continue through the Masters next month. We won’t see “Lefty” competing at Augusta.
Golf Digest confirmed Monday evening that Mickelson won’t participate in the 2022 Masters. Astute fans had been speculating about his status when Mickelson’s name appeared under the “Past Champions Not Playing” section on the official Masters website.
The 51-year-old Mickelson, who is a three-time Masters champion, took a hiatus from playing last month. His decision came after his comments on the new Saudi golf league sparked controversy.
Mickelson made those remarks in a November interview with author Alan Shipnuck, which was published in February.
“I know I have not been my best and desperately need some time away to prioritize the ones I love most and work on being the man I want to be,” Mickelson said in a statement in which he called his comments “reckless.”
