The Houston Texans and the New York Jets agreed to a trade on Sunday afternoon involving a notable pass-rusher, just two days before the NFL’s final cut deadline.
According to multiple reports, the Texans will deal outside linebacker Shaq Lawson to the Jets in exchange for a sixth-round pick. New York acquired that pick from the San Fransisco 49ers in a trade during the 2020 season.
Lawson’s tenure in Houston was brief, as the Texans just traded for him this March. He spent 2020 with the Miami Dolphins, where he played in 14 games and made seven starts.
The Jets likely hope to use Lawson to try and fill some of the void left by defensive tackle Carl Lawson, who went down with a season-ending injury earlier this summer. The former Cincinnati Bengals breakout was poised for a huge season in New York, but will need to focus on rehabbing in the immediate future.
In the meantime, Shaq Lawson will do his best to provide the Jets with additional pass-rushing depth once the 2021 regular season starts.

Lawson hasn’t quite lived up to the expectations set out for him when he came into the league as a first-round pick in 2016 with the Bills. He played out all four years of his rookie deal in Buffalo and racked up 16.5 sacks during that span, but hit free agency in 2020.
The former Clemson linebacker signed a three-year deal worth up to $30 million with the Dolphins that spring and proved to be a reliable contributor on Miami’s defense in the fall. He made 32 tackles and four sacks in his 14 appearances, but the team’s linebacking unit was too deep for Lawson to justify having a spot for another year. The Texans traded for him this spring, sending Benardrick McKinney and a 2021 seventh-round pick to Miami.
Lawson, 27, has the potential to play a major role on the Jets defense this season. He’ll get the chance to start his time with the team this week before New York’s opener on Sept. 12.
