Tim Tebow‘s NFL comeback attempt appears to be over. The former star quarterback turned not-quite-star tight end has been released by the Jacksonville Jaguars.
After his original run at the NFL came to an end in 2015, Tebow turned his attention to other pursuits. He gave baseball a try, reaching the Triple-A level in the New York Mets organization, and worked as an analyst for ESPN/SEC Network.
News of Tebow’s comeback attempt with his former college coach Urban Meyer and the Jaguars hit on the first day of the NFL Draft. While many put it down as an attention grab, others were curious if Tebow, a true physical specimen, could develop into a Taysom Hill-type gadget player at the position.
The biggest issue for the Heisman winner was always going to be his blocking ability. Tight ends have to be able to seal defensive ends and go up against outside linebackers in run blocking. Tebow had no experience doing that as a quarterback, and it showed in an embarrassing down block attempt in his first preseason game against the Cleveland Browns that went very viral on Saturday night. Moments ago, Tebow seemed to break news of his release on Twitter.
Thank you to the @Jaguars organization and everyone who has supported me in this journey.

That was quickly followed up by Adam Schefter confirming the news. The Tebow tight end experiment is over well before the regular season.

He is one of five players to be waived today:

There are plenty who thought that Meyer, who is unbelievably close with Tim Tebow, would do whatever he could to keep his former Florida star around. To his credit, today’s decision makes it clear that any preferential treatment that Tebow received didn’t last beyond the start of training camp.
It looked pretty clear that he couldn’t cut it at his new position, and the Jacksonville Jaguars didn’t drag things out after that was very publicly clear.
