Bishop Sycamore’s football program has made headlines for all the wrong reasons this week.
Bishop Sycamore out of the state of Ohio took on IMG Academy last Sunday, and it got ugly. IMG ran Bishop Sycamore off the field in a 58-0 blowout. The context surrounding the highly-anticipated high-school football game was even more stunning than the final score, though.
Bishop Sycamore “duped” ESPN by claiming it was one of the top high school football teams in the nation. The team even claimed it had multiple four- and five-star recruits playing for it. Somehow, that wasn’t even the most disturbing aspect. The Ohio High School Athletic Association came out and said it doesn’t recognize Bishop Sycamore as an actual high school.
The bizarre and fascinating story took a new turn on Tuesday. Bishop Sycamore has fired head coach Roy Johnson, according to Chris Bumbaca of USA Today.
BREAKING: Roy Johnson is out as head coach at Bishop Sycamore, the school that played two games in three days and ESPN announcers panned on Sunday.
Quick story from about an hour’s worth of interviews with the school director. More to come. https://t.co/3KO97LUBie

Bishop Sycamore’s mission is to help provide athletes another chance at getting recognized by college programs. But the program took things too far this past weekend.
Not only did Bishop Sycamore play two games in three days, they lied about the team’s makeup and the school itself. Founder Andre Peterson doesn’t see the problem in what Bishop Sycamore is trying to accomplish.
“There’s nothing that I’ve gotten out of this that would constitute it as a scam because I’m not gaining anything financially from what we’re doing,” Peterson told USA TODAY Sports. “The reality of it is that I have a son (Javan) that’s also in the program and has been in the program for four years.
We’re not sure if the Bishop Sycamore sage will come to a close anytime soon. Roy Johnson is out as head coach, but it doesn’t sound like it’s the end of the program.
