After going 1-2 in his first three starts for Oklahoma, QB Spencer Rattler reeled off eight straight wins to finish the season, delivering a Big 12 title and Cotton Bowl wins to the Sooners. His strong finish to last season has former Oklahoma head coach Bob Stoops excited for this coming year.
Appearing on Big Noon Kick: The Offseason, Stoops said he thinks Rattler is “just scratching the surface” of what he can do. He believes that Rattler will be a Heisman Trophy contender and believes he’s in line for a huge year.
“Yeah, I believe Spencer Rattler is just scratching the surface with his potential,” Stoops said, via 247Sports. “You look at first of all, why he ought to be a Heisman leader or contender, he’s playing quarterback for Lincoln Riley… Last three quarterbacks, when you look at Lincoln with Baker Mayfield, Kyler Murray and Jalen Hurts… All three of those guys averaged like 48 touchdowns a year to seven interceptions, around 4,600 yards passing. In a shortened season, Spencer had 34 touchdowns to seven interceptions, all right, and about 3,200 yards. And again, in a shortened season. So he’s very comparable talent-wise, has an incredible release, a great arm… So I think Spencer is really gonna have a huge year, similar to those of Baker, Kyler and Jalen Hurts as well.”
Rattler spent his freshman season riding the bench behind Jalen Hurts. He appeared in three games in 2019, contributing just over 100 yards of offense.

Spencer Rattler’s first year as a starter got off to a rocky start though. After an easy win over Missouri State, he lost his first two Big 12 games against Kansas State and Iowa State.
But after a huge rebound win over Texas in the Red River Showdown, Rattler and the Sooners couldn’t be stopped. They won their remaining Big 12 games, avenged their loss to Iowa State in the Big 12 Championship Game, and upset SEC runner-up Florida to win the Cotton Bowl.
Rattler finished the season with 3,031 passing yards, 28 touchdowns and a 67.5-percent completion rate.
Expectations are always high at Oklahoma and Bob Stoops is helping to fuel them.
