The Buccaneers are keeping their quarterback room together for the 2022 season. On Wednesday, the team officially announced the signing of Blaine Gabbert.
Gabbert has been Tom Brady’s primary backup for the past two seasons. In limited action, he has completed 16 of 27 passes for 210 yards and two touchdowns.
Bringing back Gabbert for the 2022 season won’t hurt the Buccaneers’ cap situation, but it does raise some questions about their depth chart.
Will the Buccaneers keep Gabbert in the No. 2 role, or will they hand the keys over to Kyle Trask? That’s a question the NFL world wants answered.
“Another piece back for Bucs, bringing back their top backup QB from last two seasons in Gabbert,” Greg Auman of The Athletic tweeted. “Question now will be who the No. 2 is, Gabbert or Kyle Trask?”

Some fans are worried that this signing means the Buccaneers aren’t confident in Trask, albeit there’s no indication that he’s not developing properly.
“I really feel bad for Trask fans,” one fan tweeted. “Y’all really thought he’s was gonna be the starter. Then y’all thought he was gonna back up TB12.”

“Why did we draft Trask? Looking like a bad draft class by Licht,” another fan wrote.

Perhaps the Buccaneers will let Gabbert and Trask battle it out in camp for the No. 2 spot on the depth chart.
For now though, the early edge goes to Gabbert.
