Bill Belichick Appears To Disagree With Andy Reid On 1 Subject

Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid surprised a lot of fans on Monday when he said Patrick Mahomes will most likely receive more preseason snaps so he can get used to his new offensive line.

While it’s certainly important to develop chemistry, making Mahomes take more snaps in the preseason could be considered a high-risk, low-reward move. At the very least, it’s a move that New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick probably wouldn’t agree with.

During a recent press conference, Belichick said he doesn’t want his offensive linemen to focus on who they’re playing with in practice or preseason games.

“Look, we’ve told the players from back in May when we started — which is the absolute truth — not to spend a lot of time worrying about who else is out there with you,” Belichick said. “Worry about what you’re doing and try to get it right. I think that’s the most important thing for each and every one of us, if we would focus on what our job is, how to do it well, how to do it better, how to improve on it.

“Again, that’s all of us — coaches, players, everybody. That’s really what we’re trying to do, and spending a lot of time worrying about who else is doing something else and who else is out there or not out there or whatever is honestly a total waste of time and energy. And it’s not productive, so we don’t really worry about it.”

The reason Belichick stressed this point is because there’s a lot of uncertainty surrounding New England’s quarterback situation.

If the offensive linemen for the Patriots get used to blocking strictly for Cam Newton, that could be an issue if and when Mac Jones becomes the starter.

Now, this doesn’t mean that Reid is wrong for wanting his players to get used to Mahomes’ cadence. However, it goes to show that two of the best coaches in NFL history can view a certain topic different from each other.
