Big Ten referees are getting destroyed for an extremely controversial penalty call during Friday night’s game between Minnesota and Purdue.
The Golden Gophers beat the Boilermakers, 34-31, on Friday night. The game was not without controversy.
Purdue quarterback Jack Plummer found tight end Payne Durham for a touchdown late in the contest. However, the long pass was called off due to pass interference. The end zone referee determined that Durham had pushed off of his defender.
But did he actually? Most of the college football world seems to think that the Big Ten referees made a critical mistake.

The college football world thinks that Purdue got shafted pretty badly. The Big Ten referees are getting crushed on social media.
Can’t wait for the Big Ten to say it was a mistake, but do nothing. https://t.co/oVGFkBjhs9

Well, I just saw the worst call I’ve seen all year. Big Ten officiating crew just absolutely robbed Purdue on some obscure Offensive Pass Interference call. Feel terrible for the Purdue Players. Brutal call.

That exact OPI will happen in every college football game tomorrow and won’t be called. You don’t make that call, especially at that point in the game. https://t.co/TPWpBW92fn

The offensive pass interference call was extremely costly, as Purdue threw an interception on the next play. Minnesota was able to hold on for a 34-31 victory on Friday night.
There are bad penalty calls in every game – officials make mistakes, too – but this one is about as tough as it gets.
Minnesota improved to 2-3 on the season with the win, while Purdue dropped to 2-2 on the year. The Big Ten will probably be releasing a statement on this one.
