Big 12 Commissioner Will Step Away: College Sports World Reacts

April 6, 2022 by The Spun

A significant change will take place within the Big 12 conference later this year.

On Tuesday, Big 12 commissioner Bob Bowlsby announced that he is stepping away from his position later this year.

“After more than 40 years of serving in leadership roles in intercollegiate athletics, including the last 10 with the Big 12, and given the major issues that college sports in genearl and the Big 12 specifically will address in the next several years, I have reached a natural transition point in my tenure as Commissioner, as well as in my career.”

“The Big 12 will soon bring in our four new members and negotiate a new grant of rights and media rights agreements. I truly believe the Big 12 and our member institutions are in a strong position now and as we look into the future. As such, this is an appropriate time for me to step away from the Commissioner’s role so that the next leader of the Conference can take the reins on these significant matters that will come to the forefront before the end of the term of my employment agreement in 2025 to set the stage for the Big 12’s future ongoing success.”

This is a significant change within the collegiate athletics world.

Bob Bowlsby was leading the charge in the attempt to expand the College Football Playoff to 12 teams. Others will have to now carry the mantle.

However, it appears fans are ready for a change in leadership in the Big 12.

Almost timed it perfectly. Only 6 years late. #Big12 https://t.co/AcyMhz7a2S

You generally don’t keep your job after losing the two biggest brands in the conference. https://t.co/2rR0wXgHjy

Well here is something I’m sure a lot of people didn’t see coming.

Losing Texas and Oklahoma to the Big 12 was a major mistake on Bob Bowlsby’s part. However, he probably didn’t have much control over the two prestigious programs leaving.

The Big 12 will have a new leader later this year.
