Chicago Bears second-round pick Teven Jenkins is set to undergo back surgery on Wednesday, per head coach Matt Nagy. While this preseason procedure may sound severe, Nagy said he hopes the rookie offensive tackle will be able to return sometime during their 2021 campaign.
“It’s a common procedure,” Nagy said, per ESPN. “It’s gonna be done locally. You know we tried to hope to avoid the surgery with him, and we tried several treatments, but the goal is to get him back this season.”
While the hope is for a return sometime in November, sources reportedly told ESPN’s Adam Schefter that Jenkins’ season could very well be over.
This is a significant blow to the Bears front office, who sent three draft picks (No. 52, No. 83 and No. 204) to the Carolina Panthers for the rights to draft Jenkins at No. 39.
The Bears released longtime LT starter Charles Leno Jr. back in May — opening the door for this rookie prospect. As a 6-foot-6, 320 lbs offensive lineman standout from Oklahoma State, Jenkins was set to take over Chicago’s starting left tackle position.
With this impending back surgery, the team is now scrambling to fill that void.
As of right now, former Broncos right guard/right tackle Elijah Wilkinson is slated to switch over t0 the left side. The Bears also recently signed former two-time All-Pro tackle Jason Peters to compete for the starting position.
Chicago will take on the Bills in their second preseason matchup on Saturday.
