The Cleveland Browns are among the reported finalists to acquire Deshaun Watson. Even if they don’t land the Houston Texans quarterback, Baker Mayfield may be on the move.
According to Cleveland.com’s Mary Kay Cabot, the Browns have not included Mayfield in any offers for Watson. However, he might be dealt either way.
Kay Cabot wrote that “might be hard for the Browns and Mayfield to co-exist” in light of the team pursuing Watson.
“Mayfield, who was understandably rattled by the Odell Beckham Jr. ordeal last season, would undoubtedly find it awkward to return to Cleveland in 2022 and start for a team that took the Haslams private jet to Houston on Tuesday afternoon to woo his possible replacement and offer the farm to get him.”
Baker Mayfield won’t be part of the #Browns offer for #Texans Deshaun Watson, but he could be gone even if the trade doesn’t happen https://t.co/ODcQ3BAqWx

Less than two weeks ago, Kay Cabot reported that the Browns met with Mayfield’s representatives to confirm their intentions of keeping him as their starting quarterback in 2022.
As The Courier-Journal‘s Cameron Teague noted, the Browns may have created a scenario where they lose out on Watson and Mayfield without tracking a viable replacement.
Overplayed our hands now might not have a QB at all. Fun. https://t.co/qiXLNTosNL

If Mayfield sticks around to play out his fifth-year option, the relationship could grow too fractured for the 26-year-old to sign an extension regardless of his performance this season. That sets up a potentially gutting scenario of him bouncing back for another franchise.
Browns can’t have anything nice can they? If they end up keeping Baker….why would he resign with them? https://t.co/4AyY8q3FJl

Baker is going to be forced out of Cleveland and I can’t wait for him to get a championship with a different team just to rub it in the faces of this ignorant Browns organization. https://t.co/jkqljynNq4

Multiple fans see the Indianapolis Colts as a reasonable fit if Cleveland shops the former No. 1 overall pick.
The Colts would be a good landing spot for Baker https://t.co/oPOvWMFJWa

Seems like there’s a blue horseshoe hat in his future. https://t.co/xkm9wjpIBD

My guess is Colts. https://t.co/lXUfHY5Udp

Indianapolis needs a quarterback after shipping Carson Wentz to the Washington Commanders, and the Texans definitely aren’t trading Watson to a division rival.
Things could get interesting in Cleveland.
