It’s pretty clear that with Deshaun Watson set to start for the Cleveland Browns that Baker Mayfield has no place on the team anymore. But one outlet believes that the rival Pittsburgh Steelers might be his next destination.
On Friday, Mike Florio of ProFootballTalk pointed out that the Browns can’t cut Mayfield because they’d be on the hook for almost his entire $18.8 million salary. That would allow Mayfield to immediately sign for the Steelers, with the Browns paying the salary for their division rival’s presumptive starter.
Florio said that Mayfield would be humbled and motivated, and play well for Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin. Worse for the Browns, Mayfield can force the Browns to cut him and make a move possible by refusing to play for any team they want to trade him to.
The reaction to this speculation from NFL fans – particularly Steelers fans – has been understandably mixed. Some Steelers fans would rather ride with Mitch Trubisky or Mason Rudolph than Mayfield. Others are willing to take a flyer on him. Still others believe the move will simply never happen:
The Browns would salary dump trade him like the Texans did with Osweiler before we cut Baker https://t.co/fQMmoE9BfL

if Baker goes to Pittsburgh I have no idea if he will succeed on the field but it’s such a well-written revenge story that I really hope it works out https://t.co/2PsNAZ8TjM

Just like Mitch, I’d be willing to take chance on young high drafted QB talent. Sign while stock is low. https://t.co/eBf9hzZKSU

By most accounts, Baker Mayfield wanted to go to the Indianapolis Colts in a trade. But when the Colts traded for Matt Ryan, that became impossible.
At best Mayfield might be able to find a team like the Seattle Seahawks willing to trade for him. The Browns will be hard-pressed to get anything for him as a result of trading for Watson before trading Mayfield though.
