Former Browns star Joe Thomas raised eyebrows with his recent comments about Baker Mayfield, but apparently one of the details Thomas shared is “100 percent” false.
On his podcast with former teammate Andrew Hawkins, Thomas shared his take on what has gone wrong for Mayfield in Cleveland. During the segment, Thomas claimed Mayfield turned down a $30 million per year contract extension offer from the Browns last year.
Not true, says longtime Browns writer Mary Kay Cabot, citing two sources.
“The truth is, the Browns and Mayfield’s agent, Tom Mills, never engaged in substantive extensive talks for the 2018 No. 1 overall pick after the Browns exercised his fifth-year option last April worth $18.86 million,” Cabot wrote. “The plan was to possibly start talking extension in earnest around the trade deadline, but Mayfield was in the midst of the worst season of his career at that point, partly because of the torn labrum in his left non-throwing shoulder and the restrictive harness.”
It’s ‘100% false’ that Baker Mayfield turned down $30 million a year before ’21 from the #Browns; nothing imminent on the trade front: #Browns Insider https://t.co/ZlkW3KU6C0

Coming off a brutal 2021 season in which he played through injuries and put up his worst statistical output as a pro, Mayfield is now without a starting job. The Browns traded for Deshaun Watson last week, leaving Mayfield with a murky NFL future.
Cabot reports there is “nothing imminent” in regards to a Mayfield trade. He is obviously hoping to be sent somewhere he can be a starting quarterback, but the options are dwindling.
If a suitable trade partner isn’t found, the Browns could have to hold onto Mayfield or even release him, which seems to be an unlikely outcome. Overall, it has been a quick fall from grace for the 2018 No. 1 overall pick.
