Just moments about, the sporting world was stunned to learn that the No. 1 women’s tennis player in the world is retiring.
Australian star Ash Barty announced her retirement from the sport. Fans were surprised by the news because Barty is just 25 years old and took home a major title just two months ago.
Seemingly at the top of her game, Barty decided it was the right time to move on. “It’s the first time I’ve actually said it out loud and, yeah, it’s hard to say,” Barty told former doubles partner Casey Dellacqua. “But I’m so happy, and I’m so ready.”
“I don’t have the physical drive, the emotional want and everything it takes to challenge yourself at the very top of the level any more. I am spent.”
Fans were stunned by the news, but appreciative of what Barty has meant to the sport. They also loved how she went about her career.
“Respect the hell out of Ash Barty being like ‘I have accomplished literally everything I have set out to do, I’m ready to move on to do other things.’ Kind of a baller move to go out as the best in the world at something in your prime because you’re ready for other things,” NBA writer Sam Vecenie said.

Fans will miss watching her on the court.

Barty goes out one the top of her game, having won the last major title. She took home three major titles in all, including Wimbledon last year.
