By almost all accounts, rookie quarterback Trey Lance is outplaying San Francisco 49ers incumbent Jimmy Garoppolo in camp. And it’s not especially close either.
Lance’s training camp dominance has some executives and scouts firmly believing that he’s the team’s best chance to win in 2021. One anonymous scout had especially high praise for the former No. 3 overall pick.
According to Jordan Schultz of ESPN, the scout believes that Lance’s talents offset the advantages that Garoppolo has with his accuracy and system knowledge. That scout believes that 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan can build plays that work to Lance’s strengths.
“Trey Lance has an absolute cannon,” the scout said. “I think Kyle Shanahan’s ability to design plays — combined w/Lance’s athletic ability and ridiculous arm strength — will offset Jimmy G’s advantage as a more accurate QB at this point that understands the offense better.”

As starting quarterback at North Dakota State, Trey Lance dazzled fans and scouts with his arm strength. He blew people away with his Pro Day and pre-draft workouts, leading the 49ers to trade up and take him third in the draft.
But despite giving up substantial compensation to move up, the 49ers stuck with Garoppolo.
Whether the 49ers are truly set on that position, Lance has been treating camp like a competition. And he’s been thriving.
It may not take long for Kyle Shanahan to change things up if Jimmy Garoppolo struggles to start the season.
Should Trey Lance start the season for the San Francisco 49ers?
