Andy Reid Shares His First Impressions Of Trey Lance

August 16, 2021 by The Spun Leave a Comment

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Trey Lance on the field.

The San Francisco 49ers traded up in the 2021 NFL Draft in order to select Trey Lance, an incredibly gifted but somewhat raw quarterback.

On paper, it was a move similar to the one the Kansas City Chiefs made in 2017 when they moved up to select Patrick Mahomes. So far, that decision has worked out pretty well for Andy Reid and company.

Lance made his NFL debut last night, appearing in the preseason opener against Reid and the Chiefs. His overall stat line–5-for-14 for 128 yards and a touchdown–wasn’t anything special, but the former North Dakota State star still made some impressive throws, including an 80-yard touchdown pass.

After the game, Reid was asked for his assessment of Lance’s play. San Francisco fans should be happy to hear what he had to say.

“Ah, you’re in good hands,” Reid said, via 49ers Webzone. “Yeah, he’s a good player. He looked very poised, composed, and he had a nice play on the firecracker there that he shot down the field.”

Lance remains behind Jimmy Garoppolo on the 49ers’ quarterback pecking order, but he could force Kyle Shanahan’s hand if he performs well throughout the preseason. He’ll get his next opportunity one week from today against the Los Angeles Chargers.
