Vancouver Canucks Trade For Filip Hronek

March 2, 2023 by Last Word On Hockey

In a surprising move, the Vancouver Canucks have traded their conditional 2023 first-round pick and their 2023 fourth-round pick to the Detroit Red Wings in exchange for Filip Hronek and a 2023 2nd-round pick.

GM Patrik Allvin announced today that the Canucks have acquired D Filip Hronek and Detroit’s 2023 4th rd pick in exchange for the conditional 1st rd draft pick acquired in the Bo Horvat trade with the New York Islanders and Vancouver’s 2nd rd pick in the 2023 NHL Entry Draft. pic.twitter.com/fm1IqhLByB

The Canucks have been nothing short of bad this year, and they look to be making improvements close to the deadline as they have spent two draft picks for Filip Hronek.

The Canucks gave up a conditional 2023 first-round pick that they received from the Bo Horvat trade a few weeks ago and their second-round pick, which is a high pick to give up in a draft that is one of the deepest drafts in a long time.

Surprisingly, the Red Wings gave up Filip Hronek, who has been on pace to have his best season in the NHL with 38 points in 60 games. They also spent their 2023 fourth-round pick.

What this means

In this deal, the Canucks spent one of their firsts and their second to get Filip Hronek. Although this may not seem to be a bad deal, the Canucks are in the midst of one of their worst seasons in franchise history and are in the process of rebuilding.

Because of this trade, they also don’t have a second-round pick until 2025, spending their 2024 second-round pick in the deal that got them Riley Stillman in exchange for Jason Dickinson.

Although, these two picks get them a 25-year-old defenseman who is having one of his best seasons with a playoff-contending Red Wings Squad. if he keeps this up, he could add a ton of offensive depth to a canucks blue line that is struggling outside of Quinn Hughes.

as for Detroit, they get a second-rounder from Vancouver which is almost as valuable as a late first. For a younger team like Detroit, a high pick in such a deep draft can take them a long way if they develop the prospect right. Or, they could flip the second considering the value and get a decent roster player. For now, their next move is unknown.
