Utah Mammoth Top Centre Out Indefinitely Due to Injury

December 9, 2025 by Last Word On Hockey

The Utah Mammoth announced Monday that Logan Cooley will be out indefinitely due to a lower-body injury. As of print, this means there’s currently no timetable for the 21-year-old to return to action. This is a big blow for the Mammoth, who’ll now be without their star centre for perhaps the rest of December, or maybe longer.

Utah Mammoth Lose Logan Cooley For Extended Period of Time

The injury was likely sustained against the Vancouver Canucks, where Cooley fell after driving to the net. As a result, his left leg got caught on the right post next to goaltender Kevin Lankinen. He stayed in the game, but it certainly didn’t look good. Afterwards, Cooley was a late scratch for the game on Saturday against the Calgary Flames. The best case for the Mammoth is that Cooley just pulled something, but a tear of any kind would be devastating to Utah’s season. As of now, the extent of his injury is unknown.

Cooley is an important part of Utah’s core, especially on offence. He has 14 goals and 23 points in 29 games this season, while averaging 17:49 per game. Cooley also signed an eight-year, $80 million contract in October.

How Does this Change Utah’s Lineup

With the news of Cooley’s absence, this will certainly force Mammoth head coach Andre Tourigny to make an adjustment to his lineup. Centre Barrett Hayton, who was recently scratched two games due to his offensive struggles, will remain in a top-six role. Nick Schmaltz is centring the top line, with Clayton Keller and JJ Peterka on his wings. Schmaltz and Hayton will both need to step up in a big way to fill the void left by Cooley.

In other injury news, Utah defenceman Olli Maatta skated in a full-contact sweater, so he’s nearing a return. The Mammoth are home tonight to face the Los Angeles Kings and begin a three-game home stand. Utah is currently fourth in the Central Division.
