The Current Reigning King of Oil Country Connor McDavid

June 1, 2025 by Last Word On Hockey

The Edmonton Oilers are set to take on the Florida Panthers in a rematch of the 2024 Stanley Cup Final, and one constant for the Oilers remains, Connor McDavid carries the title as the league’s greatest player. The evidence is all over his playoff productivity and performances. So, let’s take some time to review and marvel in some of Connor McDavid‘s career playoff stats. As if you needed any motivation to get up for this year’s CUP FINAL! It all gets started this Wednesday evening, be sure to make us here at Last Word On Hockey your source for all your game predictions and series preview, and subsequent review, content.

The Edmonton Oilers Superstar Connor McDavid’s Recent Playoff Stats

McDavid, as you may realize, has played ten-years in the league. Seven of those campaigns, he appeared in the postseason. Furthermore, if you focus on his most recent playoffs, he is on an incredible run. Over the past four postseasons, he has averaged eight goals, over 22 assists, and does not have the benefit of cup wins to have the advantage of simply playing longer each year. Although, the Oilers and he did make it to Game 7, before bowing out to the Panthers last year. As a recent comparable to McDavid’s stretch of playoff dominance, check out Nikita Kucherov of the Tampa Bay Lightning. He had a three-year run of averaging around eight goals and 23 assists. However, don’t forget McDavid still has one more series to boost his grand total pace.

The Usual Suspects Atop the All-Time Leaderboard

Another random stat, is that McDavid just recently became the second fastest in terms of games played to record 100 career playoff assists. Guess who was number one, why number 99 himself, Wayne Gretzky.

One other amazing individual-type stat is the rate at which McDavid records multi-point post-season contests. The man’s a whiz. He has done so in 51.1% of the playoff games he played in. Gretzky is the only one better than him in this one, at 51.9%. Heck, even McDavid’s teammate Leon Draisaitl is fourth all-time in NHL history, at 43.8%.

It’s somewhat hard to believe it took us so long to mention McDavid’s partner-in-crime, Dr. Drai. Studying the current best in terms of active players in points-per-game in the playoffs, the list is quite impressive for the Oilers.

Not only are the superstar pair of attackers, McDavid and Draisaitl, on the list, but they are joined by a teammate. And no, not a forward, Zach Hyman perhaps or Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, but a defenceman, Evan Bouchard. It really gives credit, where credit is due for the amazing offensive abilities of the Oilers rearguard. So, we know how good the individuals are on the Oilers, but what about a comment from the team perspective.

Looking back at Stanley Cup final rematches since 1967, there’s only been five times that it has happened. This year’s matchup being the fifth. Furthermore, the two most recent times it occurred, it was the Islanders versus Gretzky and the Detroit Red Wings against the Pittsburgh Penguins led by Sidney Crosby.

As evidenced by the empirical data, it does suggest a shift in the balance of power in some sense. This series has the potential to do that same thing. Aleksander Barkov is the premier two-way player and squares off the rematch against one of the best playoff scorers the league has ever witnessed.

Some Edmonton Oiler Playoff Stats Beyond Connor McDavid’s Led Offence

We will leave with one more so, defensive stat for the Oilers. Since they originally went down 2-0 to the Kings in Round 1 of this year’s playoffs, they have been on a fire as a team. Their record is a remarkable 12-2, and as a team, a .914 save percentage. Of course, we know how good Stuart Skinner has been back there since taking back over for Calvin Pickard, following his injury.

Just who prevails, Skinner vs Bobrovsky, Panthers vs Oilers, Barkov vs McDavid. Stay tuned, the series features a plethora of incredible players, and is sure to be a great one.
