The Arizona Coyotes announced that 24-year-old defenseman Jakob Chychrun has been traded to the Ottawa Senators, the team announced today. In return, the Coyotes receive a conditional 2023 first-round pick, a 2024 second-round pick from the Washington Capitals, and a second-round pick in 2026. Chychrun was heavily involved in trade rumours as the deadline approached.

Trade alert! The #Sens have acquired defenceman Jakob Chychrun from @ArizonaCoyotes in exchange for a conditional first-round draft pick in ’23, a conditional second-round selection in ’24 (previously acquired from @Capitals) and a second-round pick in ’26. 1/3 pic.twitter.com/rom59saWqP

Chychrun was scratched for the Coyotes’ game against the St. Louis Blues Saturday afternoon. The Coyotes’ PR department confirmed that the scratch was for “trade-related reasons” on Twitter. With a Jakob Chychrun trade seemingly upcoming, risking an injury is a concern for a team preparing for next year. The Coyotes are well out of the playoff race and looking to continue their rebuild. With two years left on his contract at $4.6 million per, Chyckrun was an intriguing trade piece. The return adds to their plan going forward, even with losing a young blue liner.

In 36 games this season, Chychrun has scored seven goals and added 21 assists for 28 points. He scored two goals on February 6th against the Minnesota Wild.  At the time of the trade, he sat tied for fourth on the team in total points before the healthy scratch. Chychrun also tied for first on the squad in power-play goals, averaging three minutes per game on the top unit. The Kings, with their 7th-ranked power play, will likely look for additional potency from the second unit with the addition of Chychrun.

Arizona selected the 6’2″ 220-pound Chychrun 16th overall in the 2016 NHL Entry Draft. In 373 NHL games, he has recorded 60 goals and 110 assists while averaging 21:04 minutes per game.

Conditions

According to the Senators’ PR team, the 2023 first-round pick’s conditions are that the pick is top 5 protected, and the second-round pick will become a 2024 first-round pick that is also top 10 protected. Now if that condition is met, the pick becomes a 2025 first that is unprotected.
