The first blockbuster of the season has been completed with a stunning move out of left field. Furthermore, Quinn Hughes is now a member of the Minnesota Wild, and the rebuild in Vancouver is on. With the return of a first-round pick as well as young and projected top pairing defenceman in Zeev Buium, it’s a clear indication that the Canucks are going into a rebuild.

A truly massive trade, and the second time in a short amount of time that the captain of the franchise has been traded away in Van City. You may recall, Bo Horvat to the Islanders.

Instant Analysis

This move by Vancouver instantly makes the team worse. Quinn Hughes is one of the best defencemen in the world today, and the book on Zeev Buium is that he has the potential to be a top-pairing defenceman, but not on the level of a Quinn Hughes. Marco Rossi has also had some issues within Minnesota’s system with a contract dispute before the season. Liam Ohgren has had some flashes of brilliance in the past and projects to be a middle-six forward. Last year at the AHL level, he had 37 points in 41 games.

However, the key piece in the return is Zeev Buium without a doubt. The 2024 12th-overall pick has been a part of the Wild all season. With 31 games played, he is up to 14 points. He plays 18-and-half minutes a game in his first NHL season. He was the second defenceman selected in the draft behind Zayne Parekh of the Calgary Flames. The 2026 first round pick is confirmed to be a unprotected pick.

This trade is by far the biggest trade in Minnesota Wild history, and could be the biggest in Canucks history as well.
